Today marks my official one year anniversary in Chicago! Yep that’s right, I moved here 365 days ago. Right after the Cubs won the World Series (gag me) and everyone was in high spirits here in the windy city. It was a really warm day, which was lucky because it was early November. And you know how the weather here can be. But it was a beautiful day and a wonderful weekend to move to the city!
Now comes the fun part. And by that, I mean all the rest that comes with moving out on your own for the first time. My roommate (and one of my college best friends) and I moved here together and somehow managed to find an apartment while not actually living here. Spoiler alert: we did, and I got a job lined up at Banana Republic. Everything seemed to be falling into place! But it hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park.
Throwback to my street a year ago.
From there we rented U-Hauls and made the trek up to Chicago with our parents. We moved all our stuff in, took in a comedy show, and started our new lives out on our own. And honestly it was hard and horrible and it’s still hard. Slightly less horrible.
I had to start work that following Monday so I didn’t really have a chance to get acquainted much with my neighborhood or the city in general. Plus after about three weeks the weather got too cold for me to want to go out and venture around. So for the first two months I just worked a lot and tried to get acclimated with the city.
Once the new year hit I started taking classes at iO and Second City. I also started auditioning for work and started working at one job instead of two. I started getting more comfortable with the city and started meeting people (more on making friends as an adult here.) So my life was slowly (very slowly) but surely starting to have a life of its own.
Now that I’ve been here for a year that last statement feels even truer. I am starting to find a place where I feel comfortable and actually enjoy the city. Moving right as winter was starting was rough you guys. I do not recommend it.
But the spring finally came and I started to get more at home with my place in the city. We moved to a new neighborhood in August and I’m glad we got to move earlier. I couldn’t imagine moving now because it’s really cold this November. Last year we got lucky and it was super warm!
Yes I’ve been here for about a year and I’m very happy I did! It’s been a tough journey, but I’m pretty content with the way things are going right now. Of course I have a lot of plans for the year ahead. Stay tuned!
