For as long as I can remember I’ve hated coffee. A lot. I’ve always been a fan of tea. I liked the idea of coffee but it tastes like bitter bean water, which it essentially is. Not until about a year ago did I start drinking coffee, and I gotta say I don’t know which I like better now. Or do I?
My mom had always been a big tea drinker, drinking upwards of three cups a day. She would be what you call a tea aficionado. She always judges the quality of a restaurant by the quality of their iced tea. No joke. So it makes sense that I’ve always liked tea.
My dad loves coffee and I would try his from time to time as a kid, but I couldn’t get over the bitter flavor although I’ve always love the smell. I love the idea of coffee and its haunting aroma, but hated the flavor of the coffee itself. It wasn’t until my senior year in college did I suck it up and start to drink coffee. And by suck it up, I mean I drank lattes for the first six months I started drinking coffee. You gotta start somewhere, right?
From there I went on to drink a half coffee, half milk concoction I made with some vanilla syrup. I drank that for a while before finally whittling down to black coffee with a dash of milk and simple syrup or sugar. And bam! I’m a coffee lover, right?
Honestly not really. There are times when I crave the taste of it (not often) or when I absolutely need it (because caffeine). But for the most part, I like the taste of tea more. Hot or iced, I like my tea black. The flavors and sugar screw it up for me. I like a simple black iced tea, or a hot vanilla lavender tea that I make at home. I get it from this tea shop in St. Louis and it’s SO GOOD. My mom sends it up to me from home since I can’t make it there very often (thanks mom!)
In short, I prefer tea over coffee, except for those days that I really crave or need it. And I don’t know about you, but I have stomach problems (acid reflux, woo) and coffee can really screw that up. It curbs my hunger so I don’t want to eat and then end up so hungry my torso feels hollow. Or it just immediately hurts my stomach with the familiar sharp pain acid reflux cause me. If you have it too, you know. But when it’s all said and done, I love both drinks, but not equally. Tea you the OG. Better luck next time, coffee.
Do you prefer coffee, tea, or both?
