Nowadays life seems to be all go, go, go. We’re always in a hurry: trying to get to our next meeting, appointment, party, etc. It seems like we never get a chance to slow down. I know I don’t.
I am a very go, go, go type of person. I want everything done exactly the way I want and I wanted it done ten minutes ago. That’s just how my personality is, team. I’m driven as hell, yo. But it’s super exhausting. I get jealous of the people who never seem to be in a hurry, right after I stop tapping my foot waiting on them to get done with whatever they’re doing. But I have a feeling that maybe they’re doing it right. Maybe we shouldn’t be going 100 miles per hour all the time.
That brought me to trying to slow down. Yes, I have to actively slow down and make an effort. Hey, I just told you I’m not good at it, cut me some slack! Nevertheless, I decided to take some time for myself. It wasn’t easy but I think I’m getting better at slowing down.
I pick one day a week, just one, where I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do. No work, no projects (that aren’t just for fun), no errands, nothing. I get to do whatever I want. I’ll go see a movie, go the farmers market, or just sit at home all day. Whatever it is, I pick a day to do just that. It turns out that I am a lot happier and a lot less stressed.
I am no longer obsessing over all the work I need to get done or worry that I am not doing enough and I’ll get behind with work. It feels good to not have to have my brain going like that all day. So for one day a week, I get to do whatever I want.
Slowing down isn’t something that comes easily to me, but I think I am getting better at it. Slowly (lol, pun) but surely I will be able to slow down enough to enjoy myself totally. I have a lot of work to do before that, but I believe that slowing down is so, so important to a balanced and happy life.
