Spring is here and this season always brings me back to my closet. I dust off the gingham and stripes and clean out my closet! This time every year I clean out my closet, room, and apartment to get it ready for the warmer, lighter months ahead. But this year I thought I would try a different tactic to cleaning out the clutter.
This year was the first year I really had to put away my winter clothes and pull out my spring/summer clothes. I have usually had a big enough closet and storage space that I wouldn’t really have to put anything away in storage. Basically the past few years I would put my winter clothes on the bottom of the drawer or back of the closet and call it a day. But now that I am living in a big city where closet space is limited, I have resorted to other measures and am going to share what my crafty storage. Bring in the storage trunk!
Use creative storage. I use a trunk (that also doubles for our coffee table) now for my seasonal items, and let me tell you it’s a life saver. I put all the clothes I don’t need in there and I’m good to go. If you’re limited on space, I suggest trying something like this for storage spaces. I have always been a fan of trunks, but don’t forget the under the bed space too!
Go through your clothes again. Whenever I’m pulling out all warm clothes and packing away my cold ones, I always reevaluate them before putting them away. If I know that I haven’t worn a sweater all season or there’s a skirt I know I won’t wear this year, I get rid of them! Either donate those or try and resell them (Poshmark’s my fave) and you have to be brutally honest with yourself. If you can’t remember the last time you’ve worn it or forgot that you own it, it’s gotta go.
Something that I read somewhere that I am starting to try is have all your hangers face one way. Whenever you wear an item of clothing, turn the hanger around. After six months or so look and see which hangers are unturned. Those items that are on the unturned hangers need to go! We’ll see how this works for me as well but so far so good.
Reorganize it all! I have been slowly but surely doing this this past week, from my clothes closet to my trunk to our hall closet. If you reorganize you will be able to take a look at all you have and see what you want to keep and what you no longer need. This can also go back to your clothes, because you can (and should) go through everything to see what you want to keep and what you should toss.
Do you have any foolproof ways to clean out your space or reorganize you closet?
