Classic and preppy style is the thing over on this blog, and it’s important to keep those pieces last a long time. Whenever I want to buy a new piece one of the firsts thing I think is “Will I like this in a year? Will it last more than a few seasons?” If the answer is yes, it seems to me like a great piece that will stand the test of time. But how to choose? And how to keep those pieces looking good as new for many, many years?
For me, it’s all about being choosy. I am picky, I mean particular by nature so it’s a little less difficult for me. I spend a lot of time deciding on whether or not to get something no matter what it is.
- Don’t Buy Every Trend Each Season. You don’t need an off-shoulder top, velvet sneakers, a Cult Gaia bag, and every other trend every season. Unless you can afford that in which case by all means go ahead. However, if you’re looking for a few pieces to last you a long time, only pick one or two trends you really love and leave the rest of your hard earned money for more classic pieces. I always buy one or two trends but at a lower price point. That way I’m not spending a ton of money on something I’ll wear for one summer.
- Pick Classic Styles to Invest In. There are a few pieces in every closet that are good investment pieces. A classic bag, pair of riding boots, a camel coat, etc. Whatever it is, save up for these pieces. They will last you years and years for good reason! They’re quality pieces in a classic style. You’re gonna wear them, and wear them all the time. Trust me.
Classic Investment Pieces (some are even a bit on the affordable side!)
- Take Care of the Classic Styles You Invested In. Now that you have a few pieces that you’ll be keeping for a while it’s improntat to take care of them. These pieces will last longer if you give them a little R & R every so often. Get a good leather cleaner and polisher for your shoes, jackets, and bags. (See more of my clothing care tips here and closet organization here!)
- Think Before You Buy. Before you buy something you think you have to have, think for a minute. Don’t buy it just because it’s a good price or a specific brand or designer. I have been better about this this year, but it’s a hard habit to break. Think about how this piece will fit into your closet, style, and budget. If it doesn’t fit into all three, you shouldn’t buy it! Your wallet and closet will thank you I promise.
Have any other tips for finding and keeping pieces that stand the test of time? I’d love to hear them!
